Chelsio Update, August 2017

Intel launched the Scalable Xeon server platform with integrated support of iWARP RDMA networking for software-defined storage, NVM Express over Fabric, virtual machine migration, and other high-throughput, low-latency applications. This announcement now makes iWARP the default RDMA connectivity and RoCEv2 the add-on on most server platforms. Beyond further validating the iWARP technology, this announcement complements Chelsio’s iWARP RDMA product direction and solution portfolio. Chelsio iWARP RDMA solution is:
  • Available in 1/10/24/40/50/100 Gbps speeds and scales to wherever Ethernet scales.

  • Robust, stable, mature, proven, scalable.

  • Cost effective and works with all legacy switches and routers allowing brownfield install options and thus decouples the server-storage and switch refresh cycle.

  • Easy to use and requires no special switches, gateways, server configuration or IT training and runs all InfiniBand applications without modification across datacenters, MANs and WANs.

  • Best fit for Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), Client RDMA, Storage Replica NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) and GPUDirect RDMA.

  • Inboxed in major Linux and Windows Distributions.

Chelsio achieved a record encryption offload performance in the industry. A T6 NIC can now offload 10k concurrent SSL connections at 12% CPU, at no extra price, power, latency, bandwidth, or IOPs penalty. You can now enable encryption by default once you have selected T6 as the NIC solution, and in most cases save a PCIe slot normally reserved for then encryption chip, in the process.

Chelsio announced that its Unified Wire adapters have been independently validated as providing full support for hyper-converged Windows Server 2016 Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) deployments without requiring Top-of-Rack (ToR) switches to support Data Center Bridging (DCB) capabilities.

Chelsio announced benchmark results of the integrated DPDK packet handling capabilities of the latest Chelsio Terminator 6 (T6) 100GbE adapters, delivering throughput of over 176 Gb/s for 512B packets, 75 MPPS unidirectional and 93 MPPS Bi-Directional packet rate for small packets, which is a major milestone towards taking NFV forward for large-scale deployment.

Chelsio announced driver support for Sierra, the latest release of the macOS, making it the only high-performance connectivity provider with a full range of 1/10/25/40/50/100GbE storage and network connectivity solutions to support high-performance audio and video workflows for 4K high-definition production.

Chelsio demonstrated T6 Unified Wire adapters for acceleration of Avid Media Composer® running on Windows 10 Enterprise Client at National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) 2017 conference, delivering consistently higher network throughput for video workflows at lower CPU utilization. The Windows 10 Enterprise Client RDMA feature allows improved response times for the broad base of Windows 10 Enterprise professional applications, including video editing applications, requiring high-performance access to Windows Server storage.

Chelsio added a number of News reports and white papers to its technical library, including:
  • Chelsio published frequently asked questions about the iWARP support in recent Intel Scalable Xeon platform announcement.

  • Intel, Chelsio and Cavium published a Technical Brief highlighting how iWARP RDMA addresses current network bottlenecks for high-speed Ethernet and provides a high-throughput, low-latency, and low-CPU utilization data communication without requiring separate infrastructure (for InfiniBand) or lossless Ethernet (for RoCEv2). iWARP can simply run over current Ethernet infrastructure and is a highly scalable RDMA solution.

  • Chelsio published NVMe over iWARP Fabrics Performance results showing that remote NVMe SSD IOPS and Bandwidth are same as local NVMe SSDs. Remote NVMe access adds less than 12μs latency demonstrating an efficient approach to access remote storage.

  • Chelsio published a technical brief introducing Switchless Backbone feature using the adapter’s integrated eSwitch. The feature enables various applications including Microsoft S2D, NVMe fabric rack, QoS and Traffic management, while lowering TCO and CAPEX at the same time. The integrated eSwitch can be configured as a backbone to connect servers while supporting 100Gbps TCP/UDP/iSCSI/iSER/iWARP/NVMe-oF/SMBD and in-line TLS/SSL/DTLS network traffic simultaneously.

  • Chelsio published a paper highlighting T6 unified wire adapter’s superior Apache TLS/SSL acceleration capabilities by comparing Chelsio Crypto Accelerator’s performance with Intel AES-NI and software encryption. T6 provided throughput numbers up to 5x the software encryption and 50% higher than Intel AES-NI along with the least CPU usage.

  • Chelsio published a benchmark report showcasing the accelerating capabilities of T6 unified wire adapters for secure IPsec-based VPN connections by comparing Chelsio Crypto Accelerator’s performance with Intel AES-NI. With 15% higher throughout and 50% lesser CPU usage than Intel AES-NI, Chelsio’s solution proved to be the best choice for secure low-cost IPsec-based VPN solution.

  • Chelsio published a paper showcasing T6 unified wire adapter’s disk encryption capabilities by comparing Chelsio Crypto Accelerator’s encryption/decryption rate and CPU usage results with Intel AES-NI and software encryption. Chelsio outperformed the competition with more than 95Gbps and less than half CPU utilization.

  • Chelsio published a paper comparing T6 unified wire adapter’s DPDK packet-rate performance with Mellanox adapter at 100Gbps. Chelsio beats Mellanox with a record-breaking 75 MPPS unidirectional packet rate at lower I/O sizes. This coupled with support for Crypto, OVS offload, Traffic QoS, packet classification and filtering functions makes T6 ideal fit for networking applications using DPDK.

  • Chelsio published a paper demonstrating the superior rate-limiting capabilities of Chelsio iWARP RDMA solution for windows S2D. T6 unified wire adapters offload the QoS functionality onto the adapter and rate-limits the traffic in an S2D environment. T6 can help datacenters create a unified network with low operational cost and reduced power consumption.

  • Chelsio jointly published a white paper on “Meeting Today’s Data Center Challenges” with HPCWire. This 7-page custom whitepaper covers: TCO advantages of the iWARP standard, How RDMA can speed up your data pipeline without CPU involvement, and Distinct benefits.
